Sony PS5 Pro details and possible reveal date emerge online

In recent months, rumors about a PlayStation 5 Pro model have been circulating, and new information has come to light regarding its specifications and potential launch date. While Sony has not officially confirmed the existence of a PS5 Pro, various leaks and sources have provided intriguing details about what could be a powerful addition to the PlayStation lineup.

Specifications Unveiled

A user on the ResetEra forums has posted supposed additional details and specifications about Sony’s PS5 Pro model, suggesting a reveal in September of the following year. According to this leak, the PS5 Pro, codenamed “Viola,” will maintain the Zen2 architecture found in the existing PS5 for compatibility.

However, it will feature a higher dynamic peak frequency of 4.4GHz. The CPU is expected to have 64 KB of L1 cache per core, 512 KB of L2 cache per core, and 8 MB of L3 shared (4 MB per CCX).

Viola’s GPU, codenamed “GFX1115,” will have 28WGPs (56 CUs) enabled for the silicon in retail PS5 Pro units out of a possible 30WGPs when fully enabled. It is built on TSMC’s N4P process. The architecture is RDNA3, incorporating ray tracing improvements from RDNA4. Dedicated ray tracing hardware will handle BVH traversal, reducing reliance on shaders, and thread reordering will help reduce data and execution divergence.

The GPU is expected to have 3584 shaders, 224 TMUs, and 96 ROPs. It will be paired with 16GB of 18 Gbps GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit memory bus, delivering a memory bandwidth of 576 GB/s. The GPU’s frequency target is 2.0 GHz, resulting in peak dual-issue TFLOPs in the range of 28.67 TFLOPs (or 14.33 TFLOPs if we ignore the dual-issue factor). This represents a significant leap in performance, with a 50-60% rasterization uplift over previous models.

One notable feature of the PS5 Pro is the inclusion of the XDNA2 NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for accelerating Sony’s temporal machine learning upscaling technique. This aims to provide temporally stable upscaled 4K output at higher than 30 FPS, focusing on enhancing the gaming experience.

Key technologies in PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro, codenamed “Trinity,” brings together three key technologies: fast storage with hardware-accelerated compression and decompression (an existing feature in the PS5), accelerated ray tracing, and upscaling. These technologies are expected to significantly enhance the overall gaming experience and graphical fidelity.

While the details provided by the ResetEra user are intriguing, it’s essential to approach this information with caution. Sony has yet to confirm the existence of a PS5 Pro, and none of the information has been officially verified. However, the leak suggests a potential reveal date of September 2024 for the PS5 Pro.

On Twitter, leaker Tom Henderson was asked about these leaked additional specs but refrained from commenting on them. He did mention that Sony is expected to distribute dev kits to third-party developers, possibly leading to more detailed leaks in the coming months.
