Su Zhu, co-founder of the now-collapsed hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC), recently shared his surprising perspective on his nearly three-month-long prison sentence in Singapore.
Zhu, incarcerated for failing to cooperate with an investigation into 3AC’s liquidation, described his time behind bars as “enjoyable” and expressed a sense of kinship with his ancestors. This unconventional account has sparked mixed reactions from the crypto community.
An unexpected perspective on prison life
Su Zhu, the co-founder of Three Arrows Capital, recently made headlines by sharing his unexpected perspective on his time in a Singaporean prison. In a post on January 22, Zhu reflected on his experiences through edited clips from an unreleased podcast that featured him, fellow 3AC co-founder Kyle Davies, pseudonymous OX social media manager “Lukas,” and another unknown guest.
Despite the negative connotations often associated with incarceration, Zhu stated, “Obviously, no one wants to go to prison, but I think it was a really enjoyable experience overall.” He elaborated that some of the activities allowed in prison were akin to entertainment from ancient times, giving inmates a unique sense of connection to their ancestors.
A “magical feeling” and the best sleep of his life
Perhaps the most surprising revelation from Zhu’s reflections was his description of the “magical feeling” he experienced during his time in prison. He claimed that he felt a deep kinship with his ancestors while incarcerated as if he were living in a manner consistent with their way of life. This sentiment, however, has left many scratching their heads in disbelief.
Additionally, Zhu shared an unconventional perspective on sleep in prison. He explained that Singaporean jails do not provide beds, so inmates sleep on the ground. According to Zhu, this unconventional sleeping arrangement decompresses his spine, resulting in the “best sleep” of his life.
Mixed reactions from the crypto community
Unsurprisingly, Su Zhu’s unique perspective on his prison experience has generated mixed reactions within the cryptocurrency community. One crypto enthusiast, Laurence Day, the creator of Wildcat Protocol, offered a sarcastic take on Zhu’s insights.
Day quipped that Zhu seemed so “terminally online” that only prison could provide the same sense of kinship that a casual walk on the beach might offer someone else.
It is important to note that Zhu’s incarceration resulted from his attempt to leave Singapore after a local court sentenced him to four months in prison for failing to cooperate with an investigation into the liquidation of Three Arrows Capital.
