Gemini cryptocurrency exchange co-founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss have joined Bitcoin podcaster Peter McCormack as the co-owners of Real Bedford Football Club (RBFC). The announcement was made available on the club’s official website. The announcement notes that the co-founders of Gemini made a significant investment of $4.5 million worth of Bitcoin into the club.

The statement also said that the investment and acquisition were carried out through the Winklevoss Capital investment firm. The funds will be used to set up a Bitcoin treasury owned by the club, with co-owner Peter McCormack noting that it will help them against fiat debasement in the long term.
McCormack stated that the funds will also be used for infrastructure as the club needs it to achieve its ambitions. In addition, the statement notes that part of the funds will be channeled into building a new training center. The club will also infuse some funds into its ongoing support for youth and female football. Peter McCormack, a native of Bedford, acquired the club in 2021. The club is situated in the same city with a population of about 200,000.
Ambitions for the Premier League and community support
McCormack has reiterated his ambitions for the club’s growth since he took over as the owner. He hopes the club could one day make its way into the Premier League and compete with heavyweights like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal. Since he took over, the club has enabled users to pay for tickets, merchandise, and other services using Bitcoin. He noted that even though the club is a long way from the Premier League, there is a hope that they could get there but they have to take it one step at a time.
Notably, RBCF will have to qualify through several tiers of English football leagues before getting to the Premier League. The Winklevoss twins also noted their shared ambitions with McCormack to make the football club great in the United Kingdom. In his statement, Cameron Winklevoss explained that the investment is not just to improve the club, it is to pave the way for them to make the move into the Premier League. Tyler Winklevoss also noted that aside from their shared conviction for Bitcoin, the goal is to help RBFC in its quest to make a charge for premier league football.
