The gaming industry has endured a hard year as notable companies like Microsoft and Sony slashed a huge workforce, hundreds or even thousands of workers. Now, another victim has emerged: Paladin, from the Netherlands, is ceasing operations following almost 19 years of its creation journey.
Paladin partnerships
Throughout its history, Paladin’s success has been marked by high-level partnerships and a strong presence. For example, after its establishment in 2005, Paladin presented a strong player like Cut The Rope, Tamagotchi, and Katamari. The house had a list of production tracks and worked with some of the greatest industrial players, such as Nintendo, Apple Arcade, Netflix, and Bandai Namco, to mention but a few.
In 2020, Paladin came together with Nintendo Labs joined forces to make an eShop title for the Switch game “Good Job!” that was well received and elevated the team’s status as an excellent and accomplished development group.
Continued support for existing titles
The good fortune of Paladin was able to help keep things afloat, but in recent times getting enough contracts still proved to be a challenge, risking the finances of the company. In a statement on its website, the studio acknowledged its very hard decision to shut its doors, especially taking into account the need to be debt-free and to make sure that the well-being of its staff comes in the first place.
“Going further with the current outlook would have been an irresponsible decision that would have likely caused insolvency. We have therefore taken this step to ensure a proper winding down, where all employees are given proper severance and the studio remains debt-free.”
In spite of Paladin shutting down, the company promised the fan base and the players with the technical cooperation of the existing titles. Closing of the gates of Paladin is certainly a most bitter-sweet experience for the gaming industry. It is a mixed feeling on one hand as it brings to the conclusion of a period of depression by a creative company that has done so much for the industry. On the one hand, it becomes evident how the platform encourages innovations and diversification in creating a more competitive landscape.
With the games industry constantly changing, Paladin’s heritage and its impact on future generations of developers, artists, and storytellers will leave a legacy that may well influence future generations of game developers, artists, and storytellers.
