Silicon Valley startup ClimateAi is using artificial intelligence to assess crop vulnerability to climate change, enabling farmers to make proactive decisions
In central India, tomato growers have been grappling with the increasing volatility of extreme weather events over the past decade. Severe droughts have punctuated the region, leading to substantial crop losses and threatening the livelihoods of local farmers. However, on the other side of the world, a Silicon Valley startup called ClimateAi is pioneering an artificial intelligence (AI) platform that could provide the breakthrough needed to combat the climate crisis.
Empowering farmers with AI insights
ClimateAi’s AI platform evaluates the vulnerability of crops to rising temperatures and changing climate conditions over the next two decades. By analyzing climate, water, and soil data specific to a particular location, the platform predicts the viability of future farming in that region. One of its early case studies in Maharashtra, India, showcased the power of this technology. Farmers were able to input details about the seeds they were using and their planting preferences into the ClimateAi app. Using this data, ClimateAi ran simulations and forecasted that extreme heat and drought could cause a substantial 30% decline in tomato yields in the region over the next two decades. Armed with this information, farmers adjusted their strategies. They opted for more climate-resilient seed varieties and changed their planting schedules. This rapid decision-making, enabled by AI insights, allowed farmers to adapt quickly to changing conditions and reduce costs.
Himanshu Gupta, co-founder of ClimateAi and a native of India, emphasized the transformative role of AI in addressing climate change: “The way we think about AI is it’s a time and effectiveness multiplier to the solutions for climate change.”

Fengqi You, chair professor at Cornell University’s engineering school, emphasized AI’s predictive capabilities, which can be harnessed to understand everything from small-scale molecular interactions to broader climate systems. Balancing AI’s environmental impact
As AI becomes more integrated into climate research and mitigation efforts, there is a growing concern about its environmental impact. The infrastructure supporting AI, including energy-consuming data centers filled with powerful computers, could strain the environment. To harness AI’s potential while minimizing its carbon footprint, collaboration between software engineers and climate scientists is imperative.
Kara Lamb, an associate research scientist at Columbia University’s earth and environmental engineering department, acknowledges the need to strike a balance: “It’s definitely something that has to be considered as this trade-off.” Nevertheless, she emphasizes that the benefits of applying AI to climate solutions far outweigh the negatives.
