In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), researchers extensively analyzed artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, focusing on their human-like behaviors and personality traits. This study, aimed at assessing the capabilities of AI in mimicking human behavior, utilized the latest versions of OpenAI’s Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer series, GPT-3.5-Turbo (ChatGPT-3) and GPT-4 (ChatGPT-4), and compared their performances against a vast dataset of human responses.
AI’s human-like behaviors under scrutiny
The study evaluated AI chatbots through the lens of the OCEAN Big Five personality model, encompassing Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. Alongside, chatbots were engaged in a series of behavioral games, including the Dictator Game, Trust Game, and Public Goods Game, to name a few, which were designed to unveil traits like altruism, fairness, and cooperation, among others.
The findings revealed that ChatGPT-4 closely aligns with human median scores across all personality dimensions, showcasing a remarkable human-like behavior pattern. ChatGPT-3, while slightly deviating in openness, is also strongly correlated with human behaviors, albeit with distinct personality profiles that set each AI version apart.
One of the study’s significant revelations was the AI’s performance in strategic decision-making games, indicating a potential for ChatGPT-4 to pass the Turing test, a measure of a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human. This aspect was particularly highlighted in games that assessed traits like risk aversion, altruism, and fairness, where AI’s decisions often mirrored or surpassed human actions.
Moreover, the analysis explored how AI chatbots adapt their strategies in response to different conditions, showing a sophisticated level of responsiveness to contextual cues similar to human behavior. This adaptability, coupled with the AI’s ability to “learn” from past game roles, underscores a complex understanding of cooperation and trust, aligning closely with human strategic decision-making.
