A UK-based startup, Mind Foundry, specializing in the development of advanced AI applications for critical sectors, has recently raised $22 million in funding, marking a significant leap forward in the integration of AI within the insurance industry. In a strategic move to revolutionize insurance practices, Mind Foundry’s pioneering AI tools have been instrumental in detecting cognitive decline among elderly drivers in Japan, in collaboration with the renowned Asian insurance giant, Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Co. Notably, Aioi was a key contributor in the latest funding round, alongside Parkwalk Advisors and the University of Oxford, as announced by Brian Mullins, the CEO of Mind Foundry. With this Series B investment, the startup’s total funding has now reached an impressive $44 million.
Traditionally, the insurance industry has heavily relied on standard variables such as vehicle type and the age of the driver to forecast potential risks and determine insurance premiums. However, in recent years, the integration of AI software has facilitated expedited claims settlements and enabled a more precise analysis of driving data, resulting in more accurate risk assessments for customers. Mullins emphasized the positive impact of AI in this realm, particularly with regards to senior citizens, noting that not all individuals age in the same manner. He stated, “Now data can tell us that the person is driving safely. That’s a responsible use of AI.”
Established in 2016 by a team of computer scientists from the University of Oxford, Mind Foundry has continually focused on developing AI solutions for high-stakes applications, ranging from defense to public infrastructure challenges. The startup’s recent endeavors include the creation of an AI-driven product designed to detect cognitive decline in elderly drivers, paving the way for its expansion into other global markets within the insurance sector.
To create its innovative AI system, the Oxford-based startup collaborated closely with insurance experts, leveraging vast datasets encompassing 9 billion miles of telematics trip data, sensor measurements, and dashcam footage. This comprehensive approach facilitated a nuanced understanding of underwriting risks and enabled the identification of behavioral patterns associated with cognitive decline among drivers, thus allowing for timely interventions.
Mullins underscored the significance of addressing large-loss cases, emphasizing that they not only pose the most significant risk in an insurance portfolio but also present a formidable challenge in terms of modeling and prediction.

Mind Foundry’s collaboration with Aioi involves a pilot program encompassing 2 million older drivers in Japan, who have consented to the analysis of their telematics data, including dashcam footage. Vincent Muller, a professor of philosophy and ethics of AI at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg, highlighted the need for accountability in the deployment of AI, emphasizing the distinction between human and machine error. Muller stressed, “Humans make mistakes, sometimes they can be trusted less than the machines, but at least they can be held responsible.”
