Eigenlayer’s Twitter account was hacked earlier today, and a malicious airdrop campaign was posted. Users expecting rewards from the last airdrop were targeted.
The post claimed that users could participate in a new airdrop, but clicking the link led to a phishing site. This link had no connection to Eigenlayer’s restaking protocol or legitimate activities.
The post was deleted soon after it was made, so at least the hackers lost access quickly.
ZachXBT, a well-known on-chain investigator, immediately alerted users via his Telegram channel. He warned against clicking any links posted by the compromised account.
Crypto security keeps being a concern
The hack is part of a larger trend in the crypto space where social media accounts, especially Twitter and Discord, have been increasingly targeted.
Even the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had their account hacked recently, with the FBI making an arrest in that case just yesterday.
Eigenlayer has seen massive growth this year. The platform caught the attention of traders and investors because of its unique restaking mechanism, which allows them to earn additional returns on their staked Ethereum (ETH) while providing security to multiple protocols.
As of press time, Eigenlayer’s market capitalization is $767 million, with the EIGEN token trading around $4.30.
The token saw a 145% surge in 24-hour trading volume following its listing on major exchanges Binance, KuCoin, and Bitget. Coinbase transitioned EIGEN-PERP into a standard perpetual futures market, broadening the options for speculative trading.
Eigenlayer has also amassed $11.98 billion in total value locked (TVL). Analysts are already predicting that the EIGEN token could hit new all-time highs, with some expecting a potential 400% price increase through the rest of October.
