FC Barcelona, the European football heavyweight, has revealed its partnership with the NFT collection, World of Women, for the release of the second NFT in its ten-piece ‘Masterpiece’ collection. Titled ‘Empowerment’, the token will be available for auction on the OpenSea marketplace from June 26 to June 28.
According to a press release The collaboration aims to highlight women’s continued contributions and achievements in football. The NFT, crafted by World of Women artist Rhi Madeline, pays homage to FC Barcelona’s women’s club captain Alexia Putellas. It is important to note that Putellas led her team to a victory in the Women’s Champions League semi-final match against the German team Wolfsburg in 2022, a triumph observed by almost 92,000 spectators.
A step towards greater representation
‘Empowerment’ is more than just an NFT; it’s a symbol of women’s football progress in recent years. Diana-Luk Ye, the Web3 Partnerships and Marketing Manager at World of Women, sees the NFT as an extension of their mission to empower women and non-binary people across the Web3 space and beyond. “Representation is still an issue that we’re trying to fix”, Ye said.
The NFT includes several FC Barcelona benefits for its owner. The perks include a meet-and-greet with Putellas, a pair of signed soccer cleats, and a physical chair from Barcelona Stadium Spotify Camp Nou, which comes with a signed portrait of Putellas by artist Oscar Tusquets.
FC Barcelona’s continued innovations in Web3 space
The release of ‘Empowerment’ follows the successful auction of the first Masterpiece NFT dedicated to Johan Cruyff, which fetched $693,000 at a Sotheby’s auction. This move reinforces FC Barcelona’s innovative fan engagement and history celebration approach through blockchain technology. More importantly, the ‘Empowerment’ NFTs underscore the club’s commitment to advocating for female athletes and their recognition in the sport2.
The ‘Empowerment’ NFT auction is another significant stride for FC Barcelona in the world of blockchain technology and Web3 initiatives, further merging the realms of football and blockchain. This collaboration sets a new precedent for other sports clubs to use technology to connect with fans and celebrate the significant moments in their history.
