The Italian data protection agency has issued a temporary suspension of the OpenAI-owned artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, and begun an investigation into potential violations of privacy regulations. The action follows news of the platform’s data breach on March 20th. Consequently, immediate restrictions have been placed on data processing operations for Italian users of ChatGPT.
The Italian data watchdog also found that OpenAI failed to provide users with sufficient information regarding the data it collects and stores. Additionally, they highlighted that there was no legal basis justifying the mass collection of personal data by the AI while training its algorithms. Moreover, they noted that the ChatGPT chatbot’s responses don’t always reflect reality, leaving room for inaccuracies when processing personal data.
Furthermore, the agency noted that ChatGPT’s own data protection rules were potentially breached as there is no filter in place to verify the users’ ages, putting minors at risk of being exposed to unsuitable answers for their developing minds.
The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Policy (CAIDP) has also raised concerns about the release of the AI chatbot ChatGPT, filing a complaint against it on March 31. According to CAIDP, the chatbot is biased, deceptive, and poses a potential risk to public safety and privacy. This issue is not limited to Italy but extends to other parts of the world.
