Pro-XRP lawyer and Senate hopeful John Deaton is reportedly filing an amicus brief in support of top US-based crypto exchange Coinbase.
According to court documents revealed by Fox Business journalist Eleanor Terrett, Deaton has filed for permission to appear in court in support of 4,701 Coinbase customers in the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) lawsuit against the crypto exchange.
Terrett says that before launching his Senate campaign in Massachusetts, Deaton said he would file an amicus brief on behalf of the customers if the case ever went to the District Court or appeal, which it has.
An amicus brief is when an individual or entity not a part of the case asks the court for permission to provide assistance to a side by offering expertise, insights and information relevant to the case.
Deaton announced earlier this year that, with the backing of the Winklevoss twins, Skybridge Capital CEO Anthony Scaramucci and Ripple executives, he’ll be running for the senate position of incumbent Elizabeth Warren, a senator known to have anti-crypto stances.
As stated by Deaton in an interview with Terrett,
“I will fight for that person that has $2,000 or $500 or $5,000 in savings in Bitcoin or whatever until the day I die.
This isn’t about crypto, this is about freedom, this is about upward mobility, this is about people who want a fighting chance, people who are looking to build a little wealth. They’re not looking to get rich, they’re not ‘crypto bros,’ they’re just regular people [who want] a little exposure to this alternative asset class.”
The SEC first filed a lawsuit against Coinbase in 2023, alleging that the crypto exchange violated numerous securities laws, including selling unregistered securities.
