In an interview with Tucker Carlson, Pavel Durov revealed several details about Telegram’s journey and how the team has continuously prioritized its users despite pressure from governments. Pavel repeatedly mentioned his strong belief in free speech, a trait that hasn’t allowed him and his companies to operate freely from other countries.
His stubbornness led him to sell off his stake in his fast-growing social media platform before moving on to create Telegram, – which has also faced pressure from the US government over user data.
In the interview, Pavel alluded to a relatively more private future focussing on hardware devices with a crypto inspiration. The discussion came about after Durov mentioned that the US government has made numerous attempts, directly and indirectly, to try and control Telegram,
There are a lot of privacy vulnerabilities in today’s digital world, and many social media platforms are operating as government tools, synthesizing user private information, which is then made available to the government or used for data-inspired marketing. Funny enough, the Telegram CEO mentioned that despite Telegram’s growing popularity, the tech company has spent absolutely no money on marketing. If you ask me, that’s quite impressive. Despite a budget of 0 USD for marketing, the platform has grown to nearly 800 million monthly active users organically.
Pavel Durov’s view on How Crypto-Inspired devices can improve privacy
The Telegram CEO discussed a possible way to ensure more privacy for users in this digital era. According to him, developers and innovators in the tech space should draw inspiration from crypto hardware wallets.
Crypto hardware wallets currently provide the much-desired privacy for digital users. The Telegram team is constantly starving to ensure more user privacy and promote free speech, and as a result, the platform recently launched a crypto feature.
The team launched a new payment feature that uses Toncoin, which operates on the TON native blockchain native network. The move shows Pavel Durov’s strong belief in the functionalities of blockchain technology and its ability to provide a secure means of communication.
According to Pavel Durov, the creation of secure devices for communicating – through text messaging and even calls- can be developed with a strong focus on blockchain technology, which is already in existence.
“Will there ever be a way to preserve privacy? Is there a place for it?” – Tucker Carlson asked.
“I believe in that; I’m an optimist; I think some new secure, hardware communication devices will be created, in a similar way that now we have hardware wallets who store your cryptocurrency. Maybe we will have secure communication devices , you know, to send messages or voice calls, its possible. I do believe that, you know, the world develops in cycles and if things seem to go in one direction today, doesnt mean that tomorrow they will go the same direction.” Pavel Durov responded.
The sentiments clearly show Pavel’s belief in cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology in general as a solution to preserve privacy in this digital era.
