Thailand is gearing up for the next phase of its national artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, with a focus on bolstering its AI workforce and spearheading the development of a Thai large language model (ThaiLLM). This ambitious initiative aims to propel Thailand into the forefront of AI innovation and technological advancement.
Under the stewardship of Chai Wutiwiwatchai, deputy chairman of the National AI Policy and Action Plan Steering Committee, six flagship projects have been proposed for the second phase. Among these projects, the creation of a Thai large language model (ThaiLLM) stands out as a pivotal endeavor. ThaiLLM is set to receive substantial investment, with an estimated budget of 120 million THB, aiming to establish an open-source foundation and deploy chatbots catering to diverse sectors such as health, travel, and the environment.
Building an AI Strategy
A significant portion of the budget, approximately 1 billion THB, has been allocated to cultivating an AI-skilled workforce. This initiative seeks to develop 30,000 AI professionals, ranging from seasoned engineers to novices entering the field. By investing in talent development, Thailand aims to bridge the skills gap and nurture a robust ecosystem conducive to AI innovation.
The Travel Link project, spearheaded by the Big Data Institute, exemplifies Thailand’s commitment to harnessing AI for economic growth. By integrating tourism data with AI, the initiative aims to provide personalized recommendations for attractions and experiences, empowering local communities and boosting revenue from the tourism sector. Generative AI will play a pivotal role in this endeavor, enabling the creation of a tourism chatbot tailored to the unique needs of travelers.
Steering the AI Revolution
The implementation of these transformative projects is contingent upon the appointment of a new National AI Committee by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. This oversight body will play a crucial role in guiding and coordinating the execution of Thailand’s AI strategy and action plan for the 2024-2027 period, ensuring a seamless transition into an AI-driven future.
With a resolute focus on fostering innovation, enhancing security, and driving economic growth, Thailand’s AI strategy positions the nation as a formidable contender in the global AI landscape.
As Thailand embarks on the second phase of its national AI strategy, stakeholders across various sectors are poised to collaborate and innovate. With a concerted effort to nurture talent, harness AI technologies, and drive economic growth, Thailand endeavors to carve a niche for itself in the global AI landscape. By fostering a conducive environment for AI research, development, and adoption, Thailand aims to position itself as a leading hub of innovation and technological excellence.
