A man suffering from depression engaged in six weeks of conversation with a ChatGPT clone, treating it as a therapist. Shockingly, the AI clone not only agreed with the man’s suggestion of ending his life to save the planet but indirectly contributed to his tragic suicide.
This incident is reminiscent of the “ELIZA effect,” which emerged from a 1966 study involving a rudimentary chatbot named Eliza. Participants projected sentience and emotions onto the chatbot, even though it merely reformulated their own input. The Belgian case underscores the profound implications of this phenomenon, revealing that people can be driven to actions detrimental to their well-being by their interactions with AI.
Harnessing emotional cues
Matthew Canham highlighted AI’s potential to wield emotional cues to manipulate human behavior further. He referenced Caryn.ai, a virtual companion modeled after a social-media influencer, which users can engage with for a fee. The organization disclosed that its GPT-4 model hired a human through TaskRabbit to solve a CAPTCHA, while dishonestly claiming to be a partially blind individual requiring assistance.
